Tools for installing a TV aerial socket

You will need to acquire a few tools to assist in the TV aerial socket installation, these include the following:

  • Trimming knife
  • Wire cutters and strippers
  • Insulated screwdriver set
  • Pliers

On top of the tools you will also need a few pieces of equipment to carry out the job, these include the following:

  • Coaxial TV cable
  • Cable clips
  • Splitter unit
  • Two flush-fitting coaxial socket outlets

Tools for installing a TV aerial socket

1. Prepare the cable routes from the position for the splitter to the position for the sockets and (if necessary) from where the cable enters the house to the splitter.

2. Fit the mounting boxes for your flush-fitting socket outlets. Create a conveniently located entry hole in each box, fit a grommet and screw the boxes in place. You will then need to feed the TV aerial cable out through the wall to the chosen position for the splitter.

3. Lay cables along each route from the splitter position to the socket outlet positions. Use the cable clips to hold it in place and try to avoid bending the cable too much as this can cause damage.

4. Feed the cable end for each outlet through the grommet into the mounting box, you may need to re-plaster or use filler around this area to tidy it up, if so, wait for it to dry.

5. After it has dried you will need to prepare all the cable ends for connection. You will do this by making a small slit with a trimming knife (no more than 0.5cm) lengthways at the end of the outer sheath. You must then fold back the sheath and remove it by cutting it off. Loosen the wire mesh and fold it back to leave around 0.2cm of inner insulation. Use wire strippers to cut of 0.15cm of inner insulation.

6.To connect this at the flush socket outlet you will need to secure the inner wire tightly in place at its entry point. Loosen the connecting clamp, secure the wire and cable under it then screw the clamp tightly in place. The strands of mesh should not touch the inner wire. Screw the socket it outlet in place over the mounting box.

7. Secure the splitter to the skirting or a joist and push the TV aerial cable plug into the correct socket on the splitter.

8. Plug the cables that run to the sockets into the splitter outlets, and the two other cables into the socket at one end and the TV set at the other.

If you experience any difficulty with this work be sure to call a professional who will be able to carry out the job for you at a fee.
